Munson Medical Center Central Processing Tech in Cadillac, Michigan

*This is a temporary position

SUMMARY

This position is responsible for demonstrating strong competence in decontamination, assembly, sterilization, sterile storage, and case cart assembly, and also activities that include equipment distribution and cleaning processes. Able to operate all equipment associated with the above.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

High school graduate.

Prior experience in Central Processing required.

Certified CPD Technician or equivalent certification required.

Minimum of one year successful experience as C.P.D. Aide with a Case Cart System and demonstrate knowledge of pre-established competency levels.

Good hand dexterity and eyesight.

Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

Attentive to, and recollection of, details.

Ability to:

  • Work standing for extended periods of time.

  • Frequently lift sets, pans up to 30 pounds between 48" off the floor and floor level.

  • Stoop, push, pull, bend and reach.

  • Walk moderate distances while pushing/maneuvering carts.

  • Follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Apply procedures at a 100% accuracy rate.

    Basic computer skills.

ORGANIZATION

Under the direct supervision of department manager. May receive instruction form the CPD Coordinator or lead staff.

Will receive instruction from O.R. Coordinator while stationed in the O.R.

Has contact and daily working relationship with department and other staff within the hospital; occasional contact with outside institutions.

No managerial or supervisory responsibility.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Receive clean/decontaminate, inspect, sort, disassemble, reassemble, wrap, package and process a wide variety of instruments, instrument sets and equipment.

  • Test equipment for proper functioning.

  • De-lint, inspect, fold, wrap, process and store a variety of laundered linen.

  • Label, date, initial and process goods using established sterilizing procedures.

  • Knowledgeable of all patient equipment and supplies in the department.

  • Maintain adequate inventory of sterile and non-sterile supplies.

  • Complete daily work reports and logs, sterilization records, and monitor charts and tapes from sterilizers.

  • Operate all processing machinery: Ultrasonic cleaning machine, ETO sterilizer and aerators, washer-sterilizers, gravity displacement sterilizer, vacuum sterilizers, steam cleaner, heat sealers, and cart washer.

  • Pick up used supplies and equipment within the hospital.

  • Maintain the safety and cleanliness of the department on a daily basis.

  • Perform daily maintenance on cleaning and sterilizing equipment used within the department.

  • Set up case carts for surgical procedures on a routine and emergency basis.

  • Keep current with technological changes.

  • Activities controlled by C.P.D. guidelines; by established policies and procedures or by instructions from the department manager. Must be able to recognize priority of work and alter work sequence as efficient and/or circumstances require.

  • Must be able to function under stressful conditions in a closed unit with interruptions and time pressures.

  • Exercises courtesy, pleasantness and tact in dealing with co-workers and other hospital personnel.

  • Subject to disagreeable odors and noises. Subjected to potential hazards of ETO, hot, moving machinery and equipment, pathogenic organisms, detergents and cleaning solutions; moist and humid conditions.

  • Duties of C.P.D. Tech while working in O.R. may require entry into an operating room as procedures are in progress.

  • Safety is a self-responsibility. Know the physical requirements of the job and work within those guidelines. Perform job duties safely at all times, utilizing learned body mechanics and transferring/lifting techniques. Plan your actions to promote safety. Report any unsafe situation/equipment according to hospital procedure.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

SPECIFIC DUTIES WHILE IN O.R.

  • Check case cart for completeness and items such as positioners, equipment and specialty supplies for distribution. Request instruments not available at time case was picked.

  • Locate case cart near room to be used. Place large pieces of equipment next to cart.

  • Communicate with C.S. as to added cases, canceled or any other changes in schedule.

  • Decontaminate any instruments necessary for immediate use.

  • Reprocess these items using proper procedure.

  • Return unused supplies and instruments to C.S. for reissue.

  • Decontaminate and prepare any instruments being sent out for repair.

  • Recheck all items for sterile integrity.

  • Keep batteries clean and in chargers.

  • Check biologicals for steam and Sterrad.

  • Keep workroom, hallways and autoclave room neat and orderly.

  • Update recipe books as needed. File new recipes.

  • Give report to on-coming tech. regarding case carts, schedule, instruments and anything else that is pertinent to the following cases.

  • Be attentive to needs of O.R. staff and surgeons at all times.

  • Delegated by the Director of Surgical Services the ability to stock non-controlled medications in CPD, place in specified trays and deliver the trays to nursing units.

Performs all other duties as assigned.
