Job Description:

AK Steel is seeking a Steel Quality Technology Manager at our Dearborn Works facility's Pickle Line Tandem Cold Mill. The Steel Quality Technology Manager is charged with overseeing the quality and technical performance of the Pickle Line Tandem Cold Mill. This position is tasked with optimizing the operation through continuous improvement, maximizing quality and reducing costs.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manages the Process Engineers

  • Interfaces with personnel from Operations, Quality Control, Engineering, customers, scheduling and upper management to discuss problem issues, check product quality, set standards, projects, audits, cost, quality and production issues.

  • Provide quality feedback resulting in continuous improvement in product quality.

  • Provide quality assurance by containment and dispositioning non-conforming material to insure product quality meets internal and external customer product and TS16949 requirements.

  • Collaborate with Research to test/expand process capabilities

  • Responsible for quality and productivity trends and integration of new systems.

  • Identify and prioritize area in department which require improvement and see that assistance is enlisted from all necessary personnel.

  • Monitor/audit processes to assure compliance to proper conditions and procedures.

  • Assist with quality and environmental system activities including data analysis, process observation, inspection, problem solving, issuing of work instructions, or any other activities required to see that objective is reached.

  • Maintain contact with operations and suppliers to resolve quality issues and process improvement projects.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Material Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or similar field required

  • Five years of steel industry experience required, must have a strong operations and/or technical background and maintenance abilities. Cold rolling experience

  • Computer proficiency including spreadsheets and statistical knowledge

  • Strong problem solving abilities
