*About this Opportunity


As a Model Maker 1 - CNC Specialist, you'll build prototypes, models, and mock-ups to a degree of completion required by Design/Development Teams for proper evaluation and/or presentation. You will work from sketches, layout drawings, completed detailed drawings, and CAD data as available, all in accordance with a predetermined schedule and/or priorities.

  • Achieve and maintain a depth and breadth of technical proficiency of new modeling techniques and apply to projects.

  • Assist in determining materials, methods, procedures, and technology to build models and prototypes.

  • Design and build fixtures or molds to aid in building models and prototypes.

  • Develop and/or build models, prototypes, and mock-ups in the most feasible way per customer requirements, goals, and objectives.

  • Interact effectively with internal and external resources, including Model Makers, the Model Shop Manager, outside vendors, suppliers, designers, engineers, plant personnel, program managers, and other appropriate resources.

  • Perform responsibilities in a safe and organized manner in appliance with State, Federal, and Company policy.

  • Provide vital feedback to the Model Maker, Senior Model Maker, and customers on projects.

  • Receive workload requirements and direction from the Model Maker, Senior Model Maker, Model Shop Lead, and Work Team Leader.

  • Take strong ownership in projects and provide vital feedback to customers.

  • Use standard Model Shop equipment such as lathe, mill, saws, hand tools, and inspection equipment with limited guidance.

  • Work with the Model Maker and Senior Model Maker to develop skills related to Model Shop equipment and materials.

  • Develop and/or build models, prototypes, and mock-ups using 3-Axis CNC milling machines (programming setup and operating) to a degree of completion required by Design/Development Teams for proper evaluation and/or presentation.

  • Lead the Model Maker in CNC programming and milling operations in the Herman Miller Model Shop.

  • Keep up with the latest technology in a continuous improvement operation.

  • Perform machining of aluminum, tooling board, and all plastics utilized in prototype building, per 2D or complex 3D part design.

  • Perform minimal maintenance on CNC machines, including cleaning, changing cutting fluid as needed, and contacting the manufacturer for maintenance.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.

You might be just who we're looking for if you have...

  • A US Department of Labor Journeyman Card for Design Model Maker or an Associates degree in Model Making.

  • One to five years of experience in a Design/Development Model Shop.

  • Three years of experience programming, setting up, and operating 3-Axis CNC machines in a prototype Model Shop environment.

  • Three years of programming experience with Surfcam software.

  • Pro-E experience or experience working in 3D CAD environment (a plus).

  • Good competence and creative skills.

  • Understanding of and experience with a variety of materials such as clay, wood, metal, sheet metal, plastics, epoxies, urethanes, and metal castings.

  • Familiarity with industrial design concepts and processes.

  • Understanding of manufacturing processes related to wood, metal forming, and plastics.

  • The ability to us all of the Model Shop's equipment and processes.

  • Well-developed conceptual, analytical, and communication skills.

  • Familiarity with the rapid-prototyping and rapid-tooling industry and processes.

  • The ability to make sound decisions without all relevant data.

  • The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.

  • The ability to solve problems with the sense of urgency in a fast-paced environment.

  • The ability to be a self-starter, reliable, motivated, and to work in a team environment.

  • Basic knowledge of Product View and Solid View.

  • Understanding of the modeling technologies and equipment used in CAD/CAM, Product Visualization, and FEA.

  • Well-developed conceptual, analytical, and communication skills.

  • Knowledge of commonly available office environment software such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and use of Internet.
