Department Summary

The Gas Control team is responsible for the operation of the Gas Control Center. On a 24/7 basis, directs the operation for the flow of all the gas on the gas transmission and storage system. Responsible for the group which dispatches 8 compressor stations, 15 storage fields,1,500 miles of transmission pipelines and 250 distribution regulator stations insuring the natural gas supply to Consumers Energy’s state-wide distribution systems. We monitor and control the Company’s natural gas transmission, storage, and compression system to provide safe, reliable, and reasonably priced natural gas supply to Consumers’ 1.7 million natural gas customers.

Job Description/Responsibilities

The Gas Control Superintendent has the responsibility of managing the day to day operations of the Gas Control team. Gas Control has full operational authority on CE’s Natural Gas transmission system. This includes monitoring and controlling the natural gas pipelines and M&R stations; and the dispatching of the CE compressor stations and Storage fields. The Cags Controllers monitor and control utilizing CE's “Real Time” gas SCADA system, 24/7 statewide, to ensure system operations are conducted in a safe, efficient and reliable manner as set forth by the policies, procedures and guidelines of Consumers Energy, PHMSA, and MPSC. Gas Control also monitors portions of CE's Gas Distribution System This position will supervise twelve Gas Controllers and will be responsible for defining both short and long term departmental goals to ensure operational excellence. In addition, this position is responsible for providing developmental opportunities and career pathing for Gas Control employees. This position will report to the Director of Gas Control.

Required Qualifications

  • Transmission & Distribution natural gas system operational knowledge: 5 plus years of system operational/engineering experience, decision making, complex problem solving and customer awareness.

  • 5 plus years of system operational/engineering experience, decision making, complex problem solving and customer awareness

  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program or five or more years of exempt experience, or two or more years of operation work experience.

Essential Functions

The Gas Control Superintendent supports the monitoring and control of the Consumers Energy Natural Gas Transmission (including the Compression and Storage Fields). This includes the scheduling and supervision of a 12 person team that man’s the operational control center, prepares, analyzes, and looks at trends for operational reports, takes action and proposes solutions based on the analysis of the operational reports and business knowledge, understand and follows company established procedures for safety, work methods and dispatching, utilizes effective communication skills to answer inquiries from coworkers, attends and present at internal and/or external meetings, and facilitate meetings and give presentations.

  • Excellent communication skills on the phone, radio, email, face to face, etc – Be able communicate with customers, contractors, and company employees.

  • Using a computer for up to 8 hours or more per day – Be able use, monitor, analyze multiple software applications at once.

  • Follow Written and Oral work Instructions –Be able to follow Job Aids and Work Instructions

  • Writing/ Taking notes – Be able to write and take notes or fill out paper forms

  • Be able to use standard office equipment – Copy machine, fax, printer

Hours and Travel

This position requires the individual to typically work 40 hours per week with 85% of time spent in the office or specific field locations. Travel is required to job sites and project meetings and could be significant dependent upon location. Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with storm restoration activities. Individual should be willing to participate in the on call rotation in case of potential storms. Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to help with storm restoration which may require overnight stays Individuals must have a valid driver’s license.
