Saint-Gobain Production Supervisor in L'Anse, Michigan


Our CertainTeed Ceiling Plant in L’Anse, MI is looking for a Production Supervisor to oversee all shift production activities on the plant’s production line. As an effective Production Supervisor, you are dedicated to providing leadership and direction for the activities of the production line personnel to efficiently produce quality products. Not only would you be an expert in production, but a master of environmental, health, & safety requirements. You will use this expertise to be accountable to make sure all production is in compliance with these requirements and other policies and procedures.


  • During weekends and during night shifts, oversee the entire plant and is responsible to immediately communicate with management abnormal events or circumstances.

  • Coach and mentor operators by influencing behaviors to execute and meet assigned responsibilities that directly improve individual, team, and plant performance.

  • Monitor overall safety, quality, production and key operating indicators.

  • Determine quality products to ensure ready to ship. Audit quality checks performed by line personnel.

  • Continuously evaluate production performance during a shift through monitoring and communicating the status of the plant DCS (distributed control system) system to all shift personnel. Facilitates the solution of issues by advising and/or directing hourly lead persons and shift maintenance. Requires a complete understanding of the DCS screens and their function and the effects of deviations on the production process. Must have the ability to communicate this information to the hourly operators and train them to a similar skills level in their specific areas of responsibility.

  • Assists with coordination of autonomous and preventive maintenance activities. Initiates and documents proper paperwork, such as repair work orders on plant equipment. Helps ensure accurate parts inventory through the maintenance planning system.

  • Has latitude to exercise independent judgement and discretion relative to production activity within approved policies and procedures.

  • Ensures compliance with all safety procedures, establishes and promotes the maintenance of a safe, accident free and healthy work environment. Eliminate or control hazardous conditions resulting from human error, equipment and machine operations, which may lead to human injury and/or property damage.

  • Ensures the safe, effective and efficient utilization of labor, materials, equipment, and in-process inventories in the production of all products during a shift.

  • Maintains Operations based AM and PM tasks. Creates, maintains and closes tasks in SAP system. Communicate scheduled tasks with Team Leads and Managers to ensure equipment availability and completion effectiveness.

  • Works with employees and Team Leads to assure good housekeeping practices.

  • Rotating shift work. Must relieve other Production Supervisors for absence or vacation.

  • Provide continuous process and production improvement recommendations.

  • First line support of production operators and maintenance to eliminate/minimize machine failure.

  • Lead production team meetings as needed to provide essential communication between management and production crews.

  • Handles administrative functions during a shift, including attendance, timesheets, disciplinary action/reporting of line personnel, reporting all EH&S incidents – Injuries/Recordables, Near Misses, First Aid, Environmental & Property damages. receiving, production and quality reports. Prepares incident/accident reports as needed and conduct necessary follow-ups. Contacts the appropriate Manager or support staff regarding non-routine issues as per plant policies.

  • Supports production communication needs through technical analysis of data, reports and material counts as well as data collection and compilation, reporting to production and plant management.

  • Daily production data entry, analysis and coordination with Production Supervisors and Managers to verify data accuracy.

  • Develops and audits compliance reports to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) Supports various training initiatives and business needs in alignment and coordination as needed.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Science, Industrial Management or similar discipline – or the equivalent training and experience that provides a working knowledge of the laws, regulations, practices and procedures of a manufacturing operation. Applicable experience may be considered in lieu of a formal degree.

  • Supervision of production employees in a manufacturing environment.

  • 1-2 Relevant experience in manufacturing setting; preferably in a Union environment.

  • 1-2 years’ experience in a lean or continuous improvement environment.

  • Functional familiarity with DCS and SAP systems.
