Peckham, Inc. Manufacturing Machine Operator in Lansing, Michigan

Job Description:Manufacturing Machine Operator - Peckham Inc.

*Opportunities are based upon openings available but may include Bundle Team Member, Scanner/Packager, Material Handler (Slitting / Re-Rolling), Cut Component / Dye Cut Operator, Cutting Machine Operator and/or Spreading Machine Operator.

Bundle Team Member

The Bundler uses customer and Peckham specifications to conduct visual and dimensional inspections of cut fabric prior to bundling garment pieces together.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Remove all cut parts from the cutting table and place on the bundling table for quality inspection

  • Tie each bundle in a manner which is neat, acceptable and with the proper shade levels applied for each garment’s delivery to the production floor

  • Must be able to work at consistent speeds and meet cycle times

  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds

  • Utilize a teamwork approach for all projects

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment

  • Participation in Peckham’s safety programs and ergonomic activities is required

  • Other related duties as assigned

Scanner/Packager

The Scanner/Packager is involved in the process of preparing finished garments for shipping. This position scans items and prepares shipments. This position labels and marks containers, weighs and counts products and materials, inspects labels, and transports packages.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Scan materials through machines according to specific garment and size requirements

  • Meets preparation deadlines to ensure timely shipping

  • Maintain warehouse equipment by following manufacturers’ standards of use and cleaning

  • Memorize the different fabrics used within each garment

  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds

  • Work with supervisor to ensure performance standards are met

  • Maintain safe and clean working environment

  • Participation in Peckham’s safety programs and ergonomic activities is required

  • Other related duties as assigned

Material Handler (Slitting / Re-Rolling)

The Material Handler ensures that the material is in the best condition for spreading per customer and Peckham standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Have an excellent understanding of the spreading process including but not limited to slitting and re-rolling the rolls of fabric

  • Ensure that all the rolls of fabric used are of the same or matching bins

  • Return fabric to bin postproduction, ensuring paperwork is complete and accurate

  • Troubleshoot the problems in the slitting/re-rolling area

  • Identify any defects in the fabric as it is cut out from the spread (as needed)

  • Able to lift rolls of fabric weighing between 40 pounds and 80 pounds

  • Work together to with coworkers to achieve production and quality standards

  • Other related duties as assigned

Cut Component / Dye Cut Operator

This position assists the Cut Table Supervisor with the activities and coordination of the cutting and distribution of cut components including fabric/materials, Velcro, hooks, loops, zipper thongs, hanger tape, elastic, webbing, etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Ensure all machines are operating to full capacity, including but not limited to changing components, length and color

  • Set various size/colors being produced and reload components as necessary

  • Ensure quality, correct quantity and counts of product by labeling

  • Operate and identify which machine is needed to process orders including cut component machines, embroidery machine, ink cup machine and any other pre-production process that may be required in the future

  • Monitor machines for malfunctions, identify and report problems (to Cut Component Supervisor and maintenance department); clean machines as needed

  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds

  • Assist and support the supervisor with providing one-on-one training and cross-training to new and current team members

  • Learn and follow a schedule based upon the First In First Out (FIFO) principle

  • Maintain ISO9001 and Peckham Quality System requirements

  • Support continuous improvement and lean initiatives

  • Maintain safe and clean work environment

  • Participation in Peckham’s safety programs and ergonomic activities is required

  • Other related duties as assigned

Cutting Machine Operator

The Cutting Machine Operator operates and programs the machine to cut large amounts of fabric into pattern pieces. This position ensures that the correct material is cut into the right pattern utilizing the requirements given by Peckham and Peckham’s customers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the cutting process

  • Adjust the cutting machine as needed per requirement of the fabric

  • Verify that the correct marker has been loaded onto the machine before the cut is started

  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds

  • Ability to troubleshoot problems during the cutting process

  • Work together with coworkers to achieve production and quality standards

  • Participation in Peckham’s safety programs and ergonomic activities is required

  • Other related duties as assigned

Spreading Machine Operator

The Spreading Machine Operator operates heavy-duty technical equipment to lay large amounts of fabric on the spreading table. This position ensures that the fabric is stacked evenly and that there are no uneven edges or defects before the pattern is cut.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Proficient understanding of the spreading process

  • Ensuring quality and accuracy in the amount, color and cut of fabric rolls. Document and report any shortage noticed to the supervisor

  • Set the spreading machine as per requirement of the fabric to spread

  • Identify defects in the fabric spread and report to supervisor

  • Troubleshoot the problems of the spreading machine

  • Completing cut tickets accurately to ensure relevant information is recorded

  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds

  • Willingness to help others and work together with all members of the table to achieve production and quality standards

  • Other related duties as assigned

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

The Cut Component / Dye Cut Operator position requires that the applicant pass the Peckham quality assessment.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Bundle Team Member and Material Handler: Ability to read two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities between words and between a series of numbers. Ability to write legibly.

Scanner/Packager: Ability to read and interpret documents such as pallet sheet and pallet identification forms, labels, and label verification documents. Ability to complete an accurate and legible log of information.

Cut Component / Dye Cut Operator: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Cutting Machine Operator and Spreading Machine Operator: Ability to read two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between English language words and between a series of numbers. Ability to write legibly and communicate effectively with others.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Cutting Machine Operator, Spreading Machine Operator, Bundle Team Member and Material Handler (Slitting / Re-rolling): Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

Scanner/Packager: Ability to calculate figures such as proportions, percentages and volume. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations such as adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

Cut Component / Dye Cut Operator: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure. Ability to understand numerical order as specifically related to dates and production numbers.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to carry out instructions provided.

Cut Component / Dye Cut Operator: Ability to solve practical problems and apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or schedule form in English. Have problem solving ability. Must be detail oriented and possess the ability to memorize garment number/descriptions. Must understand how to appropriately prioritize tasks.

Material Handler (Slitting and Re-rolling): Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Bundle Team Member: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is required to frequently stand, walk, and use hands and fingers to manipulate fabric. The employee is frequently required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly life and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Scanner/Packager: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit and walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate fabric, and communicate effectively to others. The employee is required to frequently sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision. The employee required to use hand jack/ motor jack to move pallets around as needed.

Cut Component / Dye Cut Operator: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit, using hands and fingers to manipulate fabric. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Additionally, a Cut Component / Dye Cut Operator is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts while performing the duties of the job.

COMMENTS

Must have access to reliable transportation and background check is required. Cell phone is not allowed while working. Additionally, all positions may move to other work areas as business requires. Person needs to have the ability to ask questions and voice concerns in relation to work and work environment.
