Position Summary: First-line supervisor of production personnel. Under management guidance, schedules work, assists with employee selection, reviews employee performance, administers work rules and recommends personnel changes. Trains employees and leads in the assigned job function(s). Responsible for productivity and operations management to the extent that it falls within department control. Recommends equipment upgrades, staffing adjustments, process modifications and may recommend product or service modifications. Supervises production employees in a designated area and is responsible for the maintenance of employee relations together with discipline, safety and general supervision of employees. Accountable for specified quantity, quality and cost of product within material specifications and labor standards. Position typically reports to a Production Manager.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Must have direct reports (typically 5-25+)

  • Leads/directs activities of team; responsible for team performance

  • Computer skills (i.e. Excel, Word, etc.)

  • Problem solving skills

  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills

  • Proven leadership skills

  • Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within manufacturing/operations

  • Ability to use and train individuals to use production/manufacturing equipment

  • Basic knowledge of plant operations management and lean principles, processes, and techniques

  • Ensures effective employee relations. Provides employee coaching and development. Makes employment decisions. Resolves employee issues through problem resolution.

  • Balances quality, productivity, cost, safety and morale to achieve positive results in all areas. Works to continuously improve in all areas.

  • Work with team to reduce cost and errors that are related to the cost of the part, downtime as well as quality issues. Regular meetings on objectives and goals that were either met or not.

  • Maintain discipline and productivity in the area. This includes 5s as well as production. Maintaining PPSB (Practical Problem Solving Boards) boards and information collected on these related to individual shift goals and actual production. Maintain a safe and secure work environment.

  • Manages departmental performance measures, including visual controls and provides regular progress reports to manager.

  • Work with maintenance team to be sure equipment PMs and TPMs are performed timely.

  • Use systems in place to complete all necessary functions of the job, including but not limited to attendance, labor reporting, material flow, scheduling, etc.

  • Provides team leader through a 120 day planning cycle.

  • Manages QDR’s.

  • Performs accident investigations.

  • Performs 8D related to production issues within the area.

  • Responsible for all other duties as may be assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED

  • 2-4+ years of related experience

  • Demonstrated leadership with the ability to lead people and get results through others.

  • Ability to plan and think ahead and plan over a 30 day time span and prepare action plans to achieve results.

  • Ability to supervise, including employee hiring and retention, performance review and discipline.

  • Must be able to train and develop others.

  • Must be able to measure the performance to goals and standards.

  • Proven ability to balance and achieve positive results in the areas of safety, quality, productivity, cost and employee relations.

  • Must be systems and continuous improvement oriented.

  • Must be quality oriented and pay attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to problem analysis and resolution.

  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Must be able to manage multiple priorities.

  • Ability to work and lead in a team environment.

Preferred Skills and experience:

  • Associate’s Degree preferred

  • Experience working with a union workforce

  • SAP experience preferred

  • This position is required to do extensive walking through factory environment production areas.

  • Required to occasionally lift and/or carry up to 35 pounds.

  • Must be able to kneel, pull, push, carry, twist, bend, forward reach and reach above shoulder level on an occasion.

  • Required to frequently sit, stoop and stand continuously.

  • Required to use fine and gross motor skills, firm hand gripping and repetition to handle physical parts.

  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.

  • Must be able to perceive the nature of sounds at normal range; includes the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound.

  • Environmental exposures may include dust, fumes, odors, loud noises and chemicals.
